Description
The CFP franc is the official currency of the French overseas collectivities in the South Pacific, namely French Polynesia, New Caledonia, and Wallis and Futuna. Introduced in 1945, it replaced the previous French colonial franc and is pegged at a fixed rate to the euro (1 € = 119.332 XPF), providing price stability across the territories.
Issued by the Institut d'émission d'outre‑mer (IEOM), the franc is subdivided into 100 centimes and is commonly denoted by the symbol ₣ or the abbreviation “Fr”. Although it shares the name “franc” with several European currencies, the CFP franc is not legal tender in metropolitan France. Its name stands for “Communauté Financière du Pacifique”, reflecting its regional monetary union.
