Description

The West African CFA franc is the common legal tender for eight member states of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA). It is issued by the Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO) and is pegged to the euro at a fixed rate, providing monetary stability across the region.

Each franc is divided into 100 centimes, though centime coins are rarely used in daily transactions. The currency is symbolized as CFA and is known locally as “franc CFA”. It circulates in Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea‑Bissau, Mali, Niger, Senegal and Togo, where French is the predominant language, with Portuguese also official in Guinea‑Bissau.
