Description
The Vietnamese đồng is the official currency of Vietnam, issued by the State Bank of Vietnam. It is denoted by the symbol ₫ and is subdivided into 10 hào, although the hào has been out of circulation since the early 1990s, making the đồng effectively a non‑fractional unit.
Introduced in 1978 to replace the previously used đồng of North and South Vietnam, the currency has undergone several revaluations due to high inflation, resulting in very high‑value banknotes such as the 500,000‑đồng note, one of the largest denominations worldwide. The đồng is widely used in daily transactions across the country, and its value is closely tied to Vietnam’s export‑driven economy.
