Description
The Uzbekistani som is the official currency of Uzbekistan, introduced in 1993 after the dissolution of the Soviet ruble. It is issued by the Central Bank of the Republic of Uzbekistan and is used for all domestic transactions, from retail purchases to government payments.
The som is subdivided into 100 tiyin, although tiyin coins have not been minted since the early 2000s and are effectively obsolete. Banknotes are available in denominations ranging from 1,000 to 100,000 som, and the currency has undergone several redesigns to incorporate advanced security features. Inflation in the 1990s led to rapid devaluation, but recent monetary reforms have stabilized the exchange rate.
