Description
The Ugandan shilling is the official currency of Uganda, introduced in 1966 to replace the East African shilling. It is issued by the Bank of Uganda, carries the symbol USh and is nominally divided into 100 cents, although cent coins are no longer in circulation.
Because of persistent inflation, the shilling has seen several redenominations and today the highest‑value banknote is 100,000 shillings. The currency is commonly referred to in Luganda as 'Shilingi ya Uganda'. Uganda remains one of the few East African nations that continues to use its own shilling rather than a regional currency.
