The hryvnia is the official currency of Ukraine, introduced in 1996 after replacing the karbovanets. It is issued by the National Bank of Ukraine and is used in all domestic transactions, serving as the primary medium of exchange for goods, services, and financial markets.

The unit is divided into 100 kopiykas, although the smallest coins are rarely circulated. The ₴ symbol was adopted in 1997, and the name “hryvnia” traces back to an old Slavic term for a gold or silver ingot. Banknotes showcase notable Ukrainian cultural and historical figures, and the 1‑hryvnia coin is bimetallic, a distinctive feature among world currencies.
