Description
The baht is the official currency of Thailand, issued by the Bank of Thailand. It is subdivided into 100 satang and is widely used in both cash and electronic transactions across the country. Banknotes range from 20 to 1,000 baht, while coins are issued in denominations of 1, 2, 5, and 10 baht as well as fractional satang coins.
Historically, the term “baht” referred to a weight of silver, and the modern symbol ฿ is derived from the Thai script for “baht.” Thailand is the only Southeast Asian nation that has never been colonized, and its currency has remained relatively stable, making it a common reference point for regional trade. The baht is also popular among tourists for its convenient denominations and the distinctive “elephant” motif on older banknotes.
