Description
The Somali shilling is the official currency of Somalia, introduced in 1962 to replace the East African shilling. It is issued by the Central Bank of Somalia and is commonly denoted by the symbol Sh.So. or simply S. The name in Somali is "Shillin Soomaali".
Although formally divided into 100 cents, coins are no longer minted and the sub‑unit is effectively unused; circulating banknotes range from 1 to 1,000 shillings. The currency has endured periods of hyperinflation and multiple parallel exchange rates due to the country’s prolonged conflict, leading many Somalis to also use foreign currencies for larger transactions. Notably, the banknotes feature indigenous wildlife and historic landmarks, reflecting Somalia’s cultural heritage.
