The Swedish krona is the official currency of Sweden, issued by the Sveriges Riksbank, the world’s oldest central bank. One krona is divided into 100 öre, although öre coins were withdrawn from circulation in 2010, making cash transactions effectively rounded to the nearest krona. The name “krona” translates to “crown” in English, reflecting Sweden’s historic royal symbolism, and the informal symbol “kr” is widely used in pricing and financial reporting. Sweden is notable for its rapid shift toward electronic payments, with cash usage declining sharply in recent years.
