The Romanian leu is the official currency of Romania, introduced in its current form in 2005 after a redenomination that removed four zeros from the former leu. It is issued by the National Bank of Romania and is used for all domestic transactions, from everyday purchases to large‑scale financial contracts.

The leu is divided into 100 bani, with coins ranging from 1 bani to 5 lei and banknotes from 1 lei up to 500 lei. The name “leu” translates to “lion,” a nod to the lion motif that appeared on the country’s early coinage, giving the currency a distinctive cultural reference.
