Description
The Pakistani rupee is the official legal tender of Pakistan, issued and regulated by the State Bank of Pakistan. It is subdivided into 100 paisa, although due to inflation, paisa coins are no longer in circulation and prices are rounded to the nearest rupee. Banknotes are available in denominations ranging from ₨10 to ₨5,000, while coins circulate in values of ₨1, ₨2, and ₨5.
First introduced in 1948, shortly after independence, the rupee replaced the Indian rupee at par. Over the decades it has undergone several redesigns to incorporate advanced security features and to reflect national symbols such as the Minar‑e‑Pakistan and the national animal, the Markhor. The currency symbol commonly used is ₨, and it is also abbreviated as “Rs”. Despite chronic inflation, the rupee remains a key medium of exchange for a population of over 230 million.
