Description
The Nepalese rupee is the official currency of Nepal, issued by the Nepal Rastra Bank, the nation’s central bank. It is denoted by the symbol रू and is subdivided into 100 paisa, although paisa coins are no longer in circulation.
Introduced in 1932, the rupee replaced the silver mohar and has since seen several series of banknotes and coins, ranging from 1 rupee up to 1,000 rupee notes. Coins are commonly minted in denominations of 1, 2, 5, and 10 rupees, while banknotes feature prominent national figures and cultural motifs.
Uniquely, the Nepalese rupee is pegged to the Indian rupee at a fixed rate of 1.6 NPR per 1 INR, and Indian rupee notes are accepted as legal tender throughout Nepal, facilitating cross‑border trade and tourism.
