The Metical is the official currency of Mozambique, a southeastern African nation. Issued by the Banco de Moçambique, it is denoted by the symbol MT and is divided into 100 centavos.

First introduced in 1980, the Metical underwent a major redenomination in 2006 when three zeros were removed to curb inflation, restoring confidence in the monetary system. Its name derives from the Arabic word “mitqāl,” a historic unit of weight for gold and silver, reflecting the region’s historic trade links.
