The Ringgit is the official currency of Malaysia, employed in all domestic transactions and international trade involving the nation. It is issued and regulated by Bank Negara Malaysia, the country’s central bank, which oversees monetary policy and currency stability.

One Ringgit is divided into 100 sen, and the currency is denoted by the symbol RM. Banknotes range from RM1 to RM100, while coins are issued in denominations of 5, 10, 20 and 50 sen. The name “ringgit” originally referred to the serrated edges of Spanish silver dollars that circulated in the region during the 16th‑19th centuries, a quirky historical footnote that remains part of its identity.
