Description
The Malawian kwacha is the official currency of Malawi, a landlocked nation in southeastern Africa. Issued by the Reserve Bank of Malawi, it is subdivided into 100 tambala, although tambala coins are no longer in circulation.
The name “kwacha” means “dawn” in the local Chichewa language, symbolising the hope of a new day after independence. The kwacha was introduced in 1971, replacing the Malawian pound at a rate of 2 kwacha to 1 pound. Banknotes feature prominent national figures and landmarks, while coins display the national coat of arms. Despite sharing the name with Zambia’s currency, the two are distinct and not interchangeable.
