Description
The Mauritian rupee is the official currency of the island nation of Mauritius, a sovereign state in the Indian Ocean. Issued by the Bank of Mauritius, it is subdivided into 100 cents, although cent denominations are rarely circulated today.
The rupee is pegged to a basket of major currencies, which helps stabilise its value against fluctuations in the global market. Coins are available in 5, 10, 20 and 50 cent, as well as 1, 5, 10 and 20 rupee denominations, while banknotes range from 25 to 2,000 rupees. A quirky aspect is that the currency symbol “Rs” is commonly used locally, but the international symbol “₨” also appears on some notes.
