Description
The kyat is the official currency of Myanmar, issued by the Central Bank of Myanmar. It is subdivided into 100 pyas, although pyas are no longer in circulation, making the kyat effectively a non‑decimal unit in everyday transactions.
Introduced in 1952 to replace the Indian rupee, the kyat has experienced periods of high inflation and multiple official exchange rates, especially after economic reforms in the 2010s. The symbol commonly used is “K”, and the native name is written as ကျပ်. The currency is primarily used within Myanmar, whose citizens are known as Burmese and whose official language is Burmese.
