Description
The Lebanese pound, locally called the ليرة لبنانية, is the official currency of Lebanon. Issued by the Banque du Liban, it is subdivided into 100 piastres (قروش). The symbol commonly used is ل.ل, though the international pound sign (£) is also seen.
Historically, the pound was pegged to the US dollar at a fixed rate of 1500 LBP per dollar from 1997 until the financial crisis of 2019, after which multiple exchange rates emerged and the currency experienced significant devaluation and inflation.
Despite the economic challenges, the pound remains legal tender for all domestic transactions, and both Arabic and French are widely used in financial documentation and everyday commerce.
