Description
The tenge is the official currency of Kazakhstan, introduced in 1993 following the country's independence from the Soviet Union. It is issued by the National Bank of Kazakhstan and is subdivided into 100 tiyn, although tiyn coins are no longer in circulation due to inflation.
In 2016 the tenge underwent a redenomination, removing three zeros (1 new tenge = 1,000 old tenge) to simplify transactions. The currency symbol, ₸, resembles a stylized “T” with two horizontal strokes and is used domestically and in international markets. Kazakhstan’s economy, rich in oil, gas, and minerals, heavily influences the tenge’s exchange rate.
