Description
The South Korean won is the official currency of the Republic of Korea, issued by the Bank of Korea. Introduced in 1953 to replace the Korean yen, it is subdivided into 100 jeon, although the jeon is no longer used in everyday transactions.
Banknotes are issued in denominations of 1,000, 5,000, 10,000 and 50,000 won, while coins range from 10 to 500 won. Notable designs include the 5,000‑won note featuring Admiral Yi Sun‑sin and the 10,000‑won note depicting the historic Gwanghwamun Gate. The won is a freely convertible currency and is widely used in both domestic and international trade.
