Description
The Jamaican dollar is the official currency of Jamaica, a Caribbean island nation located south of Cuba. Issued by the Bank of Jamaica, it has been in circulation since 1969 when it replaced the Jamaican pound at a rate of 1 dollar = 10 shillings.
One dollar is divided into 100 cents, although cent coins are rarely used in everyday transactions. Banknotes are issued in denominations of 50, 100, 500, 1000 and 2000 dollars, and the symbol J$ is commonly used to distinguish it from the U.S. dollar. The currency reflects Jamaica’s stable monetary policy, though it has experienced periodic inflation pressures.
