ISK / ZAR

The Icelandic króna is the official monetary unit of Iceland, issued by the Central Bank of Iceland. It is subdivided into 100 aurar, although aurar are no longer minted and transactions are rounded to the nearest whole króna.

Introduced in 1981 to replace the old króna at a rate of 1,000 : 1, the currency is denoted by the symbol “kr” and is commonly written as “ISK”. Iceland’s economy relies heavily on tourism, fisheries, and renewable energy, which influence the króna’s exchange dynamics. A quirky aspect is that Icelandic banknotes feature prominent national figures and natural landmarks, and the country maintains a high cash‑usage rate despite a strong digital payment infrastructure.
