Description
The Iranian rial is the official currency of Iran, issued by the Central Bank of the Islamic Republic of Iran. It serves as the medium of exchange for all domestic transactions, from everyday purchases to large‑scale trade, and is the legal tender throughout the country.
Although the rial was originally divided into 1,000 dinars, the sub‑unit has been out of circulation for decades, and prices are now quoted in whole rials. High inflation has led to very large banknote denominations, such as the 100,000‑rial note, and the currency is commonly referenced in everyday speech using the unofficial “toman,” equal to ten rials. The symbol used is ﷼.
