Description
The Indonesian Rupiah is the official legal tender of Indonesia, a Southeast Asian archipelago of over 17,000 islands. Issued and regulated by Bank Indonesia, the central bank, the rupiah is denoted by the symbol “Rp” and is used in all domestic transactions, from street‑market purchases to large‑scale corporate contracts.
Although formally divided into 100 sen, the sub‑unit has been out of circulation since the early 1970s due to inflation, and today only banknotes and coins ranging from 1,000 to 100,000 rupiah are in everyday use. The currency’s high‑denomination notes reflect Indonesia’s history of rapid price growth in the 1990s, and the 100,000‑rupiah note, introduced in 2005, remains the largest denomination in circulation.
