Description
The forint is the official currency of Hungary, introduced in 1946 to replace the hyperinflated pengő after World II. It is issued by the Hungarian National Bank (Magyar Nemzeti Bank) and is denoted by the symbol Ft.
Although the forint is formally divided into 100 fillér, the smallest denomination coins were withdrawn from circulation in 1999, making the fillér a purely historical sub‑unit. The currency’s name derives from the French “franc”, reflecting Hungary’s historic trade links, and it remains one of the few European currencies that has not adopted the euro.
