The lempira is the official currency of Honduras, introduced in 1931 to replace the peso. It is named after the 16th‑century Lenca chief Lempira, a national hero who resisted Spanish conquest.

Issued by the Banco Central de Honduras, the lempira is divided into 100 centavos and is denoted by the symbol L. Banknotes feature historic figures and landmarks, while coins often display the portrait of Lempira. The currency is widely used in everyday transactions across the country.
