The quetzal is the official currency of Guatemala, named after the vibrant resplendent quetzal bird, a national symbol revered for its beauty and cultural significance. Introduced in 1925 to replace the Guatemalan peso, the quetzal is subdivided into 100 centavos and is issued by the Banco de Guatemala.

Banknotes feature iconic imagery such as the quetzal bird, historic monuments, and notable figures, while coins display the national coat of arms. Guatemala’s economy relies heavily on agriculture, remittances, and tourism, making the quetzal a key instrument in daily transactions across the country.
