Description
The dalasi is the official currency of The Gambia, introduced in 1971 to replace the Gambian pound at a rate of one dalasi to five shillings. Issued by the Central Bank of The Gambia, it is subdivided into 100 bututs, although the smallest denominations are rarely seen in everyday transactions due to inflation.
The name “dalasi” derives from the Mandinka word for cowry shells, which were used as money before colonial coinage. Coins and banknotes feature local wildlife, cultural motifs, and portraits of former presidents, reflecting the country's heritage.
