Description
The Ghanaian cedi is the official currency of Ghana, issued by the Bank of Ghana. Introduced in 2007, it replaced the previous cedi at a rate of 1 new cedi to 10,000 old cedis, aiming to simplify transactions and restore confidence after periods of high inflation.
The cedi is subdivided into 100 pesewas, though due to inflation, pesewa coins are rarely used in everyday transactions. Its symbol, ₵, was adopted to distinguish it from other currencies, and the name “cedi” derives from the Akan word “sɛdi,” meaning money. The currency is widely used across Ghana’s diverse economy, from urban markets in Accra to rural trading in the north.
