Description

The euro is the official currency of the eurozone, a monetary union of 20 European Union member states that have adopted it as their legal tender. Introduced electronically in 1999 and as banknotes and coins in 2002, it is managed by the European Central Bank, which sets monetary policy for the area.

It is subdivided into 100 cents and is symbolised by € . The euro is the second most widely held reserve currency after the US dollar and is used by over 340 million people daily. Notably, it is the first currency to be shared across multiple sovereign nations, facilitating cross‑border trade and travel within the bloc.

Euro banknotes feature generic architectural motifs representing classical, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and modern styles, deliberately avoiding any national symbols. Coins have a common side and a national side, allowing each member state to display its own emblem.
