Description

The Egyptian pound is the legal tender of Egypt, issued by the Central Bank of Egypt. It is divided into 100 smaller units called piastres, and is commonly denoted by the symbol £ or E£. In Arabic it is called الجنيه المصري (Al‑Junayh Al‑Masri) and is widely used in everyday transactions, from market stalls to high‑value contracts.

First introduced in 1834, the pound replaced the Egyptian piastre and has undergone several revaluations, most recently in 2016 when it was floated after a long period of a fixed exchange rate. The currency is often referred to locally as “geneh,” and its banknotes feature iconic Egyptian landmarks such as the Great Pyramids and the Suez Canal, reflecting the nation’s rich heritage.
