Although the peso is officially divided into 100 centavos, centavo coins are no longer in circulation, and prices are typically rounded to the nearest peso. Banknotes are issued in denominations ranging from 1,000 to 100,000 pesos, reflecting Colombia's inflation history and the prevalence of cash and electronic payments. Spanish is the sole official language, and the currency symbol is the dollar sign ($), often written as COL$ to avoid confusion with other dollar‑denominated currencies.
