The Chinese yuan, officially known as the renminbi (RMB), is the legal tender of the People's Republic of China. Issued by the People's Bank of China, it is denoted by the symbol ¥ and is subdivided into 100 fen.

In everyday usage the term “yuan” refers to the primary unit, while “renminbi” translates to “people's currency.” Banknotes feature prominent Chinese leaders and cultural motifs, and the currency is widely used in both domestic transactions and international trade, often quoted as CN¥ in foreign exchange markets. A quirky fact is that the yuan is one of the few major currencies that still uses the same symbol as the Japanese yen, distinguished by the prefix “CN” in global markets.
