Description
The Congolese franc is the official currency of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, issued by the Central Bank of the Congo. It is subdivided into 100 centimes, although centime coins are no longer in circulation, and the franc is denoted by the symbol Fr.
Introduced in 1997 to replace the previous zaïre, the franc has experienced periods of high inflation, leading to frequent redenominations. The currency is primarily used in cash transactions, while the banking sector also handles electronic transfers in franc denominations. French is the official language, with Lingala, Swahili, Kikongo, and Tshiluba widely spoken across the country.
