Description
The Belize dollar is the official currency of Belize, a small English‑speaking nation on the eastern coast of Central America. Issued by the Central Bank of Belize, it is subdivided into 100 cents and is commonly denoted by the symbol BZ$ to distinguish it from other dollar‑denominated currencies.
Since 1978 the Belize dollar has been pegged at a fixed rate of 2 BZD to 1 USD, which helps stabilise prices and facilitates trade with its main trading partner, the United States. Coins circulate in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 25 and 50 cents as well as 1 dollar, while banknotes are issued in 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 dollar values. Belize is the only Central American country with English as its official language, and the dollar’s design often features local wildlife and historic landmarks.
