Description
The Armenian dram is the official currency of Armenia, introduced in 1993 shortly after the country regained independence following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. It is issued and regulated by the Central Bank of Armenia, which oversees monetary policy and the issuance of banknotes and coins.
The dram is subdivided into 100 luma, although luma coins are rarely circulated today. Its symbol is ֏, and the native name is դրամ. The word “dram” simply means “money” in Armenian and has historical roots dating back to medieval Armenian kingdoms. Banknotes feature prominent national landmarks, cultural icons, and historic figures, reflecting Armenia’s rich heritage.
