Description
The United Arab Emirates Dirham is the official monetary unit of the United Arab Emirates, issued by the Central Bank of the UAE. Introduced in 1973 to replace the Qatar and Dubai riyal, the dirham is subdivided into 100 fils and is commonly denoted by the symbol د.إ.
It is pegged at a fixed rate of 3.6725 dirhams to one US dollar, which helps stabilise trade and investment in a region dominated by oil exports. The name “dirham” traces back to the ancient Greek drachma, reflecting the historic trade routes that passed through the Arabian Peninsula. While Arabic is the official language, English is widely used in business and tourism.
